CITY OF NEW HAVEN, WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM SOUTH CENTRAL REGION COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT (SCRCOG), WORKS TOGETHER WITH THE COMMUNITY TO MAKE DOWNTOWN NEW HAVEN PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLING FRIENDLY
(1/26/2009) NEW HAVEN- Have you ever crossed the street in downtown New Haven and wished you had more time to safely walk across? Do you like to ride your bike downtown or to the train station but wished the streets were better designed to accommodate both vehicular and cycling traffic?
The City Of New Haven and The South Central Region Council Of Government (SCRCOG) are working with the firm of Nelson Nygaard Consulting Associates to make downtown New Haven more pedestrian and cycling friendly and are sponsoring a community meeting on January 29, 6pm at the Hall of Records, 200 Orange Street, G2. The event will serve as a forum for community input and participants will learn about what other communities have successfully accomplished in facilitating pedestrian and cycling networks.
“By engaging cycling and walking advocates, business leaders, students, local organizations, law enforcement officials, public health officials, planners, engineers, and other constituent groups, we will work together to make Downtown New Haven a place where pedestrians and cyclist can enjoy healthy lifestyle activities safely and conveniently,” said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.
Nelson Nygaard Consulting Associates, a nationally known and respected expert in the field of transportation studies, was awarded a contract by SCRCOG to assist New Haven in developing a conceptual plan to make the City’s downtown more amenable to pedestrians and cyclist.
“We were pleased to provide financial support to the City of New Haven for this worthy project.” stated SCRCOG Executive Director Judy Gott.
